What is the IB PYP?

The IB’s framework for ages 3–12: inquiry-based and transdisciplinary, not a fixed subject syllabus. Learning is organised around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, assessment is continuous with no external examinations, and the programme culminates in the PYP exhibition in the final year.

Children build conceptual understanding across, between and beyond subjects, and learn to drive their own learning. Apex works one-to-one alongside the school’s units of inquiry — never against them.

Transdisciplinary themes

What are the six PYP themes?

PYP learning is organised around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, as named by the IB: Who we are; Where we are in place and time; How we express ourselves; How the world works; How we organize ourselves; and Sharing the planet. Each theme frames a unit of inquiry rather than a separate subject. Pick one — the panel follows.

IB PYP tutors — questions parents ask

What is the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)?

The PYP is the IB’s programme for children aged 3–12. It is an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary framework — rather than a fixed subject syllabus — that builds conceptual understanding across, between and beyond subjects, organised by six transdisciplinary themes.

Does the PYP have exams?

No. PYP assessment is continuous, integrated and ongoing — there are no external examinations during the programme. Learning is assessed through the inquiry itself and, in the final year, the PYP exhibition — a collaborative inquiry shared with the school community.

What is the PYP exhibition?

In schools with three or more year levels, students complete a PYP exhibition in their final PYP year — a culminating collaborative inquiry into an issue of real significance, which they explore, document and share with the school community.

What are the six transdisciplinary themes in the IB PYP?

PYP learning is organised around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance: Who we are; Where we are in place and time; How we express ourselves; How the world works; How we organize ourselves; and Sharing the planet. Rather than teaching separate subjects, the programme frames the year around these themes, so children explore big ideas across and beyond the usual subject boundaries.

What comes after the IB PYP?

The PYP is the first of the IB’s four programmes, which together form a continuum for students aged 3 to 19. The PYP covers ages 3 to 12; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) then follows for ages 11 to 16, and the Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme covers ages 16 to 19 — one connected IB pathway across the school years.

Does my child’s school need to be an IB World School to offer the PYP?

Yes. Only schools that have been authorised by the IB may offer its programmes, including the Primary Years Programme — and an authorised school is known as an ’IB World School’. So if a school genuinely teaches the PYP, it will hold IB World School authorisation. It is always worth confirming a school’s current status directly with the IB or the school.

What is the difference between the IB PYP and MYP?

The PYP (ages 3 to 12) is an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary framework organised around six themes, with no external examinations. The Middle Years Programme (MYP, ages 11 to 16) is structured into eight subject groups and offers an optional final-year eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate — a broad framework that links study to the real world.
